Ever felt like fashion and comfort was a dichotomy? Fashion brands like ANAABU are proving that expressing your personal style can be effortless. Founded by local designer Ana Abu, the company now has its own outlet in Bangsar, KL as well as an online store which – yes! – ships worldwide. Read on for insights from the Ana herself, who was kind enough to make time for us amidst working on her upcoming Raya Collection.
What inspired you to get into fashion?
It started when I started thrifting and selling vintage clothing online almost 6 years ago. From there, I started to appreciate the beauty of creations from past designers, and how we can style them to suit the current era. I started to join bazaars, meet with like-minded people and exchanged thoughts via blogging. From there, my passion in fashion and styling grew.
How would you describe your style? Where do you acquire your wardrobe staples?
I prefer unisex designs, and my main criterion when putting together my outfits is comfort and practicality. I am more into simple and casual outfits rather than risking looking as though I’m ‘trying too hard’. My usual go-tos in styling are oversized clothing, layering, plain fabrics, tucking-in, highwaisted bottoms and rolled sleeves. And if you have good shoes, your outfit will look good – that’s what I always think.
I always buy my own designs (ANAABU) haha, and I thrift from thrift stores, or shop online. I rarely shop in department stores.
Do you have any favourite go-to outfits?
My favourite is a knee length kimono outerwear piece from ANAABU’s previous Him & Her collection as I am always on-the-go and need something that is easy to wear.
What advice would you give to those who are still trying to find their own personal style?
I don’t depend on trends – just wear what you like, keep to your own identity. I used to be someone who experimented with clothing daily, but now that I have found my own personal style, I just stick to it. What’s most important is that you are comfortable and feel confident.
Where do you think people should go for good fashion finds in Malaysia?
Malaysians are lucky. They have so many talented designers who work hard for the industry. You can visit their showrooms around Kuala Lumpur, or, if you are into thrifting, many are available in Johor Bahru and Ipoh. If you are into minimalism and comfort wear, come to Anaabu!
